I first met Derek Arden many years ago as Chief Executive of the Granada Group, when i was negotiating the financing of the £3 billion hostile takeover of the Forte Hotel Chain.

We had been badly let down by one large financial institution when they changed their mind to help, at the last minute. Derek and his team stepped in and negotiated into the late hours at the weekend to increase the amount the other banks would underwrite.

The pricing was high and higher than we wanted to pay. To keep the ongoing relationship in balance and the deal in place Derek and the team worked tirelessly to change the shape of the deal to help us and keep the consortium of banks in place.

Derek’s clear thinking enabled us to negotiate a win win transaction.
